Just learned that some idiot parents from Saskatchewan sold their farm where they made like... food and stuff with their 8 (!) kids... and moved to Russia.
Why?
Pride flags... they're Christian... or some such nonsense.
They have a semi-popular YouTube channel.
Now they're crammed in a tiny apartment in Russia, no language, no job, no nothing.
Their children, at least a majority, will hate them at some point.
I just can't imagine the level of stupidity it takes to do something like that.

@chris ... how long until their kids are drafted into Putin's war?
-
@tantramar it would be gut wrenchingly hilarious if it wasn't for the children. The most likely future for those kids if they stay in Russia is the Army…
the most likely place if they actually move back to Canada is foster care.
It is fascinating and horrifying to think the parents could be so incredibly stupid

Living in a free country in an authoritarian household cosplay fantasy is one thing... Behind a nation curtain wall, another.
Feet meet Road is about to happen, even for these parents.

@kboyd Right?
I don't know what the age range is.. but the three boys I saw looked to be between about 8-13. Prime of their child-lives and their dumbasses parents make them sleep on a floor in Russia. gawd
-
@tantramar that they are. And they *know* at a very young age when their parents are not actually looking out for them.

@paul @chris They're stuck in a country where it's a crime to say anything negative about the government, and their $$$ is stuck in the bank bc they don't speak the language well enough to explain that it's their money. So they can't even LEAVE. I don't feel sorry for them, they let their hate outweigh their sense of self-preservation, but they're stuck in a literal "shithole country" with no money, no access to all the stuff they had before, etc.

@chris @paul MASSIVE, and well-earned. They worked hard to turn themselves into hate-filled people who listened to the voices of their false gods to the exclusion of all else. Had they remembered their own Lord's commandment to love their neighbour as themselves, they'd still be in Canada, living on their farm, thriving in their lives.

My partner's area of research is Public Health Adolescent Stigma, risks and resiliencies. The assumption kids are resilient seems often an excuse to not intervene when we see an issue.
The number one variable related to resilience, in her work, is family connectedness. The second is school/social connectedness. W/o one or both of these, young people are more likely to have negative outcomes, and interventions on their behalf have low effect.
This family is isolated.

@thepoliticalcat @chris @paul At least they get to say 'Merry Christmas' again.

@thepoliticalcat @chris @paul Well, I think it's a case of ignorance, wedded to delusional-thinking, and they probably should've thought it through. I'm English, and the thought of going anywhere near Russia terrifies me.
-
@Timotei @chris @paul Once, we had many non-aligned nations independent of Great Powers. Those days are long gone, and the world is far more polarized now. Russia used to seem like an interesting society. Long ago, it turned into a gas station run by thugs armed with bombs. These people let their hate rule their minds, and are now trapped with no way of getting out. Next, we'll hear that the father and any sons have "volunteered" for military service.

They are regretful because their new neighbors in Russia don’t speak English.

@chris Anybody want to start a gay commune in Canada? I just heard about this newly available farm!
