I'm doing some rustc hacking this week and one of the things I'm really appreciating is that rustc essentially typechecks your program at several points during the compilation process. This means if you're implementing a feature by desugaring it to simpler features, the compiler checks the code you desugared to and gives you increased confidence that your desugaring is correct.
