@skinnylatte Suburban privilege here, but I walk away. If a store is going to lock up what I need/want, I’ll take all of my business to someone else who wants my $.
That said, I’ve never seen things that extreme out here in the ‘Burbs.

is this motivated by fear? by ideology? is the goal to create fear? in who? who's driving it - store managers or corporate?

@skinnylatte Much of the comment section seems like a lot of victim blaming and conspiracy theories to me. Having witnessed casual retail theft and people's indifference to it, I feel empathy for the businesses that are clearly facing some tough choices. I'm also frustrated at the inconvenience.

A lot of small local business here just closed up. I knew some of the owners. They just couldn't take the losses anymore. The Starbucks too, though in their case, it was more violence and assaults.
The local Safeway spends something like $750k/yr for security guards alone.
To entre the local government agency liquor stores, there's an enclosed security kiosk in a secure foyer, where you give them government photo ID, which is scanned, then they will buzz you in if you haven't been previously flagged. They did that after a long string of smash and grabs, assaults and stabbing.
I don't think the issue is universal, but there is definitely an issue.

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tsrams in pharmacy retail theft, the situation is simply not as dire as their own bad corporate practices. This is not conspiracy theory. Crime data on retail theft does not remotely add up to what they are claiming.

I've been in the local Shoppers Drugs when a group of four rampaged through, beat one of the security guards before leaving.Speaking with the pharmacist much later, she said things have gotten much worse in the last ten-fifteen years. They used to have front and rear entrances, now they generally only use one of the entry ways and keep the other barred. They have full-time security guards, and have cut back store hours.

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tsrams I’m not saying there is no crime, I’m saying that the corporations are blaming their poor financial performance entirely on urban crime, instead of their own poor business decisions.
I live in a city that has become famous for ‘every Walgreens gets smashed!’ And that has become a alt right dog whistle for more cops. It is true they can get smashed, but it is also true that the corporations are overstating the impact of urban crime on their already failing business
