The proper response is to largely ignore the press and speak directly to people. It's a shame that this is essentially proving true the "fake news!" attacks Trump has turned on the press for the last decade but it is what it is at this point.

The basic issue here is, fundamentally, the Democrats try to be intellectually honest. Hypocrisy is a problem, falsehoods are a problem, misquoting is a problem, speaking inaccurately about historical facts is a problem. They may fail, but generally hold themselves to a standard of honesty.
The Republicans have no such qualms. They happily lie, employ double standards, hold conflicting views, and act counter to what they preach.
