For people who use browser-based Mastodon, was there just a biggish design change today-- specifically scroll bars became a different color, buttons look different, toots in notifications column look different from normal toots -- or do I need to fix something in my local environment?

This is apparently the new look which TechCrunch implies is to "bring it in line with X" with features to maybe make it easier to understand for new users.
What I am seeing is a smaller compose box, smaller font, some new buttons that I personally don't need (I always compose in English, frex) link previews (turn offable!), wider contrasting scrollbars, and a notifications column that doesn't match the others anymore.
Been phanpy-curious, this may lead me to switch.

@jessamyn Eventually, every first-party interface has to become all things for all people, moving the interface choices to third-party apps.
@phanpy is great for web, and @ivory is my favorite for iOS (though my reading is done in Tapestry, still in private beta from the heroes at @Iconfactory ).

@macmanx Thanks -- I do not use iOS for reading Mastodon at all and would rather tweak CSS than move to a 3rd party app if I possibly can.

If others on glammr.us have similar reactions to you, there's another possibility: instance admins can install themed UIs (although as far as I know there still isn't any way to let different people choose which them they want). IF that's the case it might be worth looking at @TangerineUI or some other alternatives.
In terms of the changes, I view anything that interferes with accessiblity as a bug, full stop, and one that should be fixed. It's great that some third-party apps do such a good job focusing on accessibility, but that doesn't let the official UI off the hook. For other changes, I'm where you are, opinions differ, it's okay that it's not good for me. And it's not all-or-nothing, infosec.exchange has been running the beta version of 4.3-glitch for a while, and there are some things I do like!
Still, it's interesting to look at who it is and isn't good for. And from a process perspective who they got input from on whether diifferent changes were was good before implementing and shipping them.

FYI @tchambers when you were first testing the alternate theme on IndieWeb I remember we talked about whether it was posisble to provide it as an option so that people could choose what they prefered, and if I recall correctly it couldn't be done at the time. But @TangerineUI says it now *is* possible to install themes as an optional setting. So, worth looking into!

@jdp23 @TangerineUI looking into adding that post election. Needs to be added on inside code of Mastodon not something you can do without altering there.
