new 80s kids song is out today!
"a question of lust," by the mighty depeche mode
the black celebration album, and this song in particular, helped young me so much. that monumental opening three-song suite ... black celebration into fly on the windscreen into a question of lust ... it was a little mini-journey that was SO THERAPEUTIC for me. with a question of lust serving as the gentle release โย that nurturing voice hinting that everything might just work out

when we do these 80s kids songs, it's our goal to be as faithful to the originals as possible โย with the understanding that the differences between who we are as people and who the original artists were as people will be what sets our versions apart
we made a deliberate choice for this first 80s kids album to cover songs that were originally sung by men. the simple fact of @shannoncurtis being a woman recontextualizes the material in a number of interesting ways

specifically in regards to the gender-switch that we're pulling with these songs: there is often a question of how @shannoncurtis's register works with the material
the key that a song is written in is essential to the feeling in the song โย you can't just transpose a song and expect the emotion to translate โย so we never do that. which means that sometimes shannon is working in a very different register than the original singer โย a dynamic that's very much at play here

in the original, martin gore is solidly in the middle to upper range of his register, which gives the song a soothing, hopeful feeling. but because @shannoncurtis is singing this in a relatively much lower part of her register, the feeling is very different. it's more somber and yearning, to my ears. a little darker, a little more intense. which suits me down to the ground โย i was in a dark and intense place in my life when i bonded with this song, and this matches that
