A lot of people are seeing that the fediverse is not viewed as an attractive alternative to Twitter, and concluding is because people don't know about it. But I'm pretty sure people don't see it as an attractive alternative because they do know about it.

@jenniferplusplus it is totally different. Mastodon will remain a niche social network.
I think if twitter dies in Brazil (I hope so, as a Brazilian) it will simply vanish and nothing will take it's place.
Some will use threads and that's it.
I think this format is not what people seek nowadays. It will go away like other social networks did.
Orkut was huge in Brazil and died anyways.
To replace twitter you need to be easy to setup and understand AND have huge amounts of money backing it.

@crdpa I don't think the backing money is intrinsically necessary. The fediverse is too hard to figure out for newcomers, you're right about that. The biggest problem is that it's just not a safe or pleasant place to be for most demographics. White queers and Linux nerds do great here. Everyone else gets endless microaggressions and structural obstacles.

@jenniferplusplus the bigotry? Or other things? It seems like black folks have mostly figured out they’re not going to get a warm reception here.

@impermanen_ the bigotry is a really big part of it. But the software itself feeds into that. It favors pedantic reply guy-ism. It's hostile to finding community. It precludes the way people of color relate to each other.

People don't understands sites like this because they don't know how much a shovel weights...

@matias_hettich I'm telling you that people do understand this place and that's why they're not coming here. Engage with that, or just move on.

I guess I'm just muting this now, because holy shit is this thread going to be a top tier example of what makes this place unappealing.

@jenniferplusplus @danilo I’m pretty sure it’s because “the fediverse” is complicated and weird, because it’s decentralized, but each instance is centralized.

@gruber what am I supposed to do with this? The premise of my post is that people do understand mastodon, and don't want it. You're just responding with "nuh uh."
