#Bluesky is building a decentralised network. But how does decentralisation contribute to a better distribution of power?
I wrote about the difference between decentralisation as a technology and as a way to build better social structures.

@serapath @fediversereport Please read the linked article, I think it provides a lot more nuance on the topic than can fit into 500 characters. I definitely learned some things.

Excellent. ️ This superb article draws distinctions between #Bluesky hype, the potential, and the reality:
"The above conversation about the technological side of ATProto matters much less than how people actually use the network. Here it becomes clear that for any meaningful way to describe distributed power, the ATmosphere is not decentralised at all: over 99% of people exclusively use infrastructure that is owned by Bluesky PBC."

Understand that in principle Bluesky is built on an architecture that is designed to be open and distributed, and that their leaders seem sincere. However, there are things you only learn by doing, and so far they are not doing it. The Fediverse has the marketing disadvantage that it gets judged by actually running thousands of server instances, not hopeful, shall we say, 'bluesky' promises.
