The moderation policy changes at Meta are deeply troubling and should be a concern to anyone with a conscience.

@Gargron there's the proverb about being in bed with an elephant. It doesn't work well since a Mastodon is a lot like an elephant. Anyway, fediverse integration with Meta and other large evil corporations is looking like a worse and worse idea. Meta is a very large elephant to sleep next to.

Agreed that Meta's changes are troubling and concerning. So I would strongly urge you and any instance admin exposing their users to the harassment there to reconsider their alignment with Threads and defederate now .
That's expecially for you and mastodon.social. Think about the message that you're sending: "Instead of proactively protecting people on this instance, we'll wait for you to be harassed and then take action on individual harassers. And, we'll make that the default for new Mastodon users!"
There's a huge opportunity for Mastodon here if you take a courageous position. So please do!

@Gargron
The changes to the wording of the #moderation policies #Facebook and #Threads are deeply concerning to hear about, however, they feel more like they are openly admitting what has always been the case than any substantive change. The company has always had an internal policy, like most other corporate social networks, to allow #HateSpeech and other #misinformation to proliferate, as these drive the engagement metrics that drive revenue, on top of often aligning with the values of leadership. At #TechHub, our policy has, so far, been a "wait and see" approach. We have not blocked Threads yet, but if the time comes when they do finally federate, if ever, we are committed to the plan of taking server level action should their lack of moderation become too much of a problem for us.
Either way, this only underlines the need to bring more people into the #Fediverse network, and away from the large corporate #SocialNetworking services.

I have been very happy with mastodon.online and have been good with the decision so far, but I think I'm going to have to look for another server in light of recent events unless this one defederates from Threads.

@Gargron my family members are reaching out to me about alternatives to facebook. I think Mastodon is actually a fairly viable alternative but we really, really need 'groups' functionality to conduct our conversations the way we want to. I know y'all are working on that, I just hope it is coming sooner rather than later because it would be a game changer for my family. cheers

@[email protected] @[email protected] Checkout friendica, its compatible with mastodon and bluesky, but is more facebook-like.

@irelephant I have, no shade to the people making or using it but I find the UX to be not good enough for me to use on a daily basis or explain to my relations who aren't tech-savvy.

@Gargron Is Threads and Bluesky bridged with Mastodon?
-
@Gargron I'm was all for open social media but do feel that the Threads federation experiment is now clearly over.
-
-
@Gargron Any chance of reconsidering not to backport "local only" posts visibility from forks?
Some admins have started polls to let their users decide whether Threads should be blocked on their server, and there's no way they can keep users of other instances from voting and skewing the results.

@billyjoebowers @Gargron If you're looking for servers that guarantee no federation with Threads, see https://fedipact.veganism.social/
-
@earth_walker @irelephant I think *key servers also have groups, but I don't know which one is the most active Fork ATM
-
@stavpup Threads isn't bridged, but directly a part of the Fediverse. They only have a partial implementation of ActivityPub though.
For BlueSky, see https://fed.brid.gy/
