I feel my relationship with the news these days is a bit like spotting a few sheep in a far away field from the carriage of a train.

@JackTheCat I used to follow the news almost obsessively but yeah just for self protection a fair bit of distance is probably for the best these days.

@emsquared It's just relentlessly grim. Almost like a plot. Forced, subliminal aversion therapy.

@JackTheCat I could well believe that (fear is control). Probably more laziness, incompetence and rewarding all the wrong people have got us here. I'm happy for the cats to take over now. OK we'd be slaves to our feline overlords but hey they'd be soooo cute.

@emsquared That would be a good way to finish it all off. A brief happy period before the eternal sleep. Miaow.

@JackTheCat If this happens then it would surely would be final proof we're living in a (generally rubbish) simulation but yeah bring it on.

@emsquared that sounds like the healthiest approach tbh. Self care.

@bobthomson70 Yep. Arms length stuff. Change the little things I can but it can do no good to doomscroll the vast number of things I can't.
-
@emsquared thatβs the big problem eh? We are so exposed to events we have no ability to influence, not natural for all of human history until the last 100 years or so and itβs gotten faster and more detailed in that time too.

@bobthomson70 I think endless news coverage just tops up that sense of helplessness that many have. The sense of no control. Shouting at the world thru social media is no different to putting the world to rights with mates in a pub. It changes little other than convincing yourself that you have a voice.
