Do you uninstall apps once you have finished using them?

@lizzy That's nice for you.
What do you do with apps where you can't use a browser?

@wannesss that's nice for you. I'm using Zoom as an "example".
An "example" is a sort of placeholder idea. Here, I am using "Zoom" to represent the *concept* of an app.
Many people like to use a recognisable brand name so that people will understand the idea behind the question.
So, with that in mind, on the occasion that you *do* install an app (which may not be Zoom) - do you tend to uninstall it afterwards? -

@Edent I only ever use Zoom with their web client. With their security track record, they’re never going to have a native app running on a system I care about. If I absolutely need to install their app ever, it will be in an ephemeral VM.

@Edent I don’t install Zoom. It’s possible to join a meeting from a browser.

@vt52 a friend of mine implemented nix-fused more than 10 years ago (unfortunately as a corp-internal non-public project) which just pulled on demand whatever was needed to execute a random binary into the Nix store.
I believe there was a recent talk at #NixCon or so where someone reimplemented the same idea...
That's basically comma on steroids ️

@Edent I use NixOS, which encourages this pattern; you can tie "nix-shell -p zoom-us" and be dropped into a shell with zoom installed. Exit the shell and it's not installed any more. A cache is kept so it's slow the first time as it downloads or compiles stuff, but it's instant after that.
It's quick enough I even use "nix-shell -p nodejs_20 --command 'npm run dev'" when I'm testing a nodeJS thing I work on.

@kitten_tech so, forgive me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the app is permanently downloaded - but kept in suspended animation?
