Things I have misheard or misunderstood because I am #ActuallyAutistic:
1. When I first came to the U.S., I thought ‘paid vacation’ was when employers pay you to take a vacation. Like they give you extra money on top of your salary to go on a trip.
(That’s sort of how it works many places. But here in the U.S., it just means you can take a vacation, and still get paid, instead of if you go away you no longer have a job, which is the default otherwise, especially in service jobs)
-
2. When I started going to nice hotels, I thought ‘turn down service’ was when someone came to tuck you into bed. I never asked for it for that reason. It seemed weird.
-
3. I always thought the song ‘don’t wanna be all by myself’ was ‘I just wanna be all by myself’ (I can’t hear words very well, when they are sung)
This is also why musicals are impossible for me
