Sometimes life hands you a theremin.

@ashkendo my neighbors are learning how to play the trumpet (or maybe it's a trombone?), and some other neighbors are learning to sing, so I think we all have an understanding
They probably get more annoyed hearing me learn how to play my flute.

@docpop no volume control, only pitch?
-
@tito_swineflu only pitch, no volume. There is a knob on the front, but I think it adjusts sensitivity. There is also a ton of noise in the line. That potentiometer is probably dirty.
-
How much was it?
-
@artemesia I spent $42 for the amp, the theremin, and a small frying pan.

@docpop @tito_swineflu Hey, I built one these theremin kits that has nearly the same innards! The posts that I circled can be adjusted in the center with a small screwdriver. Pitch and sensitivity! Don’t need to turn them too much. It’s hard to do since your hand gets so close to the post! Maybe you knew this. Anyway, fun toy. Run through some distortion and delay pedals and set sail for Saturn!

@Unabart rad! Thanks for the info. Do you have more info on the kit that you bought? I'd love to know more about it and see if it's the same as this unit.
Also, do you know what the knob in the front does? I figured it was pitch/sensitivity, but mostly it just adds a bunch of noise to the line.

@docpop @macmanx the “Good Vibrations” episode of the 500 Songs… podcast (my favorite episode, BTW) dives *deep* into the fascinating history of the Theremin and the life of its creator, with ties to Orpheus, Lenin, Glenn Miller, Robert Moog, and others. Listen to or read it here: https://500songs.com/podcast/episode-146-good-vibrations-by-the-beach-boys/

@davidlantner thanks for the suggestion. There's also a great documentary from the 90s called "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey" which you might also enjoy. It's on some streaming services, but you can also find bootleg copies on youtube and other places.
