I used to hack on all sorts of programming projects on weekends, but it's been a long time since I've done it.
Been trying to think about why.
Part of it is that I feel like I know too much. I can imagine how I'd implement a thing almost immediately and therefore the challenge is over and the rest is just typing.
Part of it is that I like to work on stuff that is going to be used but I know from long experience that weekend side projects never get finished and are virtually never revisited.

@bigzaphod -- there was a brief period when there were lots of projects you could do in a weekend where the results were useful and they were fun and made things easier. but then the big companies got involved and things got more and more complicated, and they broke stuff you depended on, and it became a slog.
