I've always thought it was a great name for the possible double meaning (but never knew what was intended). A community subsisting on images.

@breakfastmtn @ansuz honestly, I used a name generator back in 2018 using a bunch of terms and pixelfed was the first one that had a .com, .net, .org available.

I registered the domains and came up with the branding before I wrote a single line of code.
