If you're on mastodon.social and use the web UI, I just realized you can enable grouped notifications in the settings now! Much nicer.
-
@renchap this is going to be the default soon, right? (Or, I guess, I assume the switch will go away entirely and the old way will be replaced with this way - which I hope.)
-
@bigzaphod yes this will be the default soon, we would like a bit more usage of it and ensure that backend performance is fine, then remove the old frontend. Probably before beta2
-
@bigzaphod Also the API for it is not yet final. We think its good but would like some feedback from client developers before stamping it as stable. We will ask for feedback once beta1 is released.
-
@renchap this probably isn't the best way to file a bug/feedback about the grouped notifications, but since I turned it on I'm seeing this sort of thing a lot on the web UI where it inserts a "..." button between entries and sometimes at the top of the column (I've even see TWO of these buttons appear both at the top of the mentions column only to quickly disappear).
I've also see a thin purple loading bar at the top of pages appearing and disappearing quite a lot, too. I don't know if related.
-
@bigzaphod the loading bar should be fixed soon, we merged a PR for this. For the « … » button, it is inserted when the frontend is disconnected from the streaming server (over websockets) to indicate that there may be missing items at this position. Does it happen when your computer gets offline / goes to sleep?
-
@renchap well I can't say for certain that I don't sometimes drop offline if maybe the ISP does something weird.. or Safari does.. but the [...] buttons definitely appear sometimes without the computer having gone to sleep.
This morning I was on a Slack voice call and was scrolling around Mastodon. One of the times I clicked over to notifications, the [...] was suddenly there despite not having been there prior and that's when I decided to msg you. The Slack voice call hadn't faltered, anyway.
-
@renchap but it could be something like iCloud private relay doing something dumb, perhaps, in a way that breaks the web socket I suppose. I realize this is likely not too helpful since there are far too many things that could go wrong.
-
@renchap lol - okay I just now had it happen again after I sent my last reply to you.
I initiated my reply to you while on the notifications tab, but I paused typing briefly and clicked on Home to check something. Then resumed typing my reply in the composer.
After I hit send, I switched back to notifications. Mentions was selected from before, so I selected "All" and then saw the thin loading indicator and the moment the loading bar got to the end, the [...] appeared at the top of the column.
-
@bigzaphod @renchap If it helps, I'm also seeing the ellipsis pretty often in the Notifications tab, even when the tab has been left open.

@bigzaphod That does not seem linked to Safari on iOS, we will investigate what is happening here
