Honestly, if you’re in the US, please vote.

because they can't appeal to toxic idealists who don't know their ass from their elbow?
that's not the democratic party's fault. that's the fault of fools who don't know how their voting system works
-
@benroyce @mrpinkly @statsguy @Mourioche @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut Because the Democratic Party lacks the spine to stand against Israel's ongoing genocide of the Palestinians, but instead enthusiastically funds it. And because the Democratic Party has done nothing to raise the minimum wage, or to bring about Medicare for all, or to enact abortion rights into law.

George, your vote will absolutely kill people if you're in a swing state with a close margin and it swings the vote to Trump. It will kill:
* immigrants
* pregnant people
* LGBTQ people, especially trans kids
* Everyone on the planet, because he'll want to promote more fossil fuel use.You're a toxic idealist and you, and Jill Stein and Ksharma Sawant are all Putin's puppets.
-
@ducksauz @WAHa_06x36 @johnstonphilip @benroyce @Mourioche My vote for Jill Stein cannot swing any state to Trump as I would never have cast my vote for Harris because of her support for Israel's genocide of the people of Palestine.
-
@mastodonmigration @benroyce @gwm @WAHa_06x36 @johnstonphilip @Mourioche The American system and history doesn't make it easy for *any* US president to change its stance on Israel. I doubt Stein could achieve much different without significant blowback.
-
@dan613 @benroyce @gwm @WAHa_06x36 @johnstonphilip @Mourioche
True, but a newly elected president with substantial majorities in both houses of congress would have a lot more options.
-
@gooba42 @benroyce @NZedAUS @gwm @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut This. If there is ranked voting, you must have the option to abstain from continuing your list at some point. Even if it's after the first person.

@whknott @benroyce @NZedAUS @gwm @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut
I don't feel like we're well served by "It's either my way or I'm not going to participate at all" which is what this amounts to.
In a theoretical "3 Trumps vs Harris" match up, I might have a hard time ranking the Trumps but under virtually any other circumstances I would have clear preferences.
-
@gooba42 @whknott @benroyce @NZedAUS @gwm @WAHa_06x36 @baconandcoconut
If I understand ranked choice voting, you don't have to vote for all the candidates. Say there are 4 candidates. You can vote for 1, 2, 3, or all of them, or none of them.

exactly
you can use your ranked choice ballot as if you were still in a fptp voting system and just mark "1" next to who you want to vote for
Of course the real power is you also get to mark a "2" for your second choice, that your vote will flow to, if your "1" choice doesn't prevail
Etc., etc. for "3", "4", "5"...

Stunned by the combination of self righteous arrogance and ignorance and flawed logic of those who insist voting for Stein is OK because they would not for Harris - all because of concern for Palestinians.
A logic that ignores what Trump has already done and will do , and not voting for Harris effectively leaves a vote for Trump that still needs to be offset.

We are looking at two separate things then, because from everything I have seen, Harris is the candidate who keeps talking about the need for a ceasefire and general de-escalation, while Trump has outright stated that he wants to give Netanyahu bigger bombs, more leeway, and deport all Palestinians Because he claims they are all criminals and terrorists. He has even literally said he wants to have protesters shot.Kamala Harris will allow Palestinians who are here to stay where it's safe until it's over, Kamala Harris will support food and medical aid to the people there, and Kamala Harris will be more aggressive about forcing the Israeli government into peace negotiations.
The difference is night and day.
At the end of the election, the only way to stop this will to pressure whoever wins. The odds are a lot better with Harris than they are with Trump.

@Gargron
I am highly concerned, as a moderator on this platform, that if Trump wins, there is a certainty that he will let Elon Musk call the shots at the #FCC and #FEC as a kickback for his full support for the campaign, which will directly threaten the North #American #Fediverse #servers. I need to post the full endorsement here, but I am definitely telling people on this network that they need to VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS, if for no other reason than to keep our comms open. -

@Raccoon @gwm @ducksauz @WAHa_06x36 @johnstonphilip @benroyce @Mourioche Sure Trump said to end it quickly because of the optics and Republicans have floated using nukes. I’m sure the Trump/Stein voters will have the greatest humanitarian outcome unraveling decades of the US supporting Israel. What could possibly go wrong?

@Gargron
I already voted for Harris/Walz -

"Duverger presents the example of an election in which 100,000 moderate voters and 80,000 radical voters are to vote for candidates for a single seat or office. If two moderate parties ran candidates and one radical candidate ran (and every voter voted), the radical candidate would tend to win unless one of the moderate candidates gathered fewer than 20,000 votes."
The US didn't get a 2nd round of orange cheato 2020 because people got their shit together and did not repeat the mistake of voting 3rd party in 2016 (in which 3rd parties trippled and quadrupled in comparison to previous elections).
2016 had a turnout of 6% voting 3rd party, whereas 2020 had 2% voting 3rd party.
