we need to stop thinking about online social as something that just needs a tweak. instead we need to be trying/experimenting with radical alternatives, platforms that almost don't qualify as social media within current conceptions of the sector, sites and apps that a16z, etc would never back because they know there's no chance they'll lead to the hypergrowth they seek

I define social networking as "any direct and indirect interaction between people" which we do for 1000's of years and now extend online.
Web 2.0 with its walled gardens very poorly supports that. With decentralized social web technologies we can rise above the level of apps & services and orchestrate/choreograph social experiences.
A new field of Social experience design (SX) is waiting to be explored. In 2022 I wrote about how we might #ReimagineSocial
Let's Reimagine Social
People are social creatures, and social networking is part of human nature. Social Media have clouded our vision and distorted what βsocialβ means. The Social Coding Movement aims to Reimagine Social Networking and envision a Peopleverse.
