Huge thanks to everyone who helped me test the signature verification, you're all awesome!
Please note that this feature is very much work in progress. I might spend a bit more time polishing it and hopefully be able to share it with others to add to their own website or a blog.
-
@stefan Stefan! I LOOOOVE your "fediverse invitation for artists" – I tried to add my signature but ran into a problem (error message / not supported) so feel free to manually add my name to it.
THANK YOU for all the fantastic work you're doing
-
@_elena My pleasure!
And sorry about the issue you're running into. I presume you're using your mastodon.social account? (I know you have a few, so just making sure.)
I was able to log in with my m.s account and it worked, so this is a bit tricky to debug, but let me poke around a bit and follow up.
Thank you so much for trying this out!
-
@stefan Thanks Stefan! I tried multiple times with my Mastodon and Sharkey account (calckey.world) – they both produced the error message.
Let me try with Pixelfed now... and if that fails, Friendica
-
@_elena Ah, Pixelfed is not yet supported, so you will definitely get this error.
Let me make a small update to make sure Sharkey is recognized, it should work otherwise.
-
@stefan I just tried again with Mastodon, Sharkey, Pixelfed and Friendica (in that order) and I still got the same error message
-
@_elena Sorry, the Sharkey update just went live now, if you care to try again.
And just to rule this out, are you putting in just the domain name, eg. mastodon.social, without http or your username?
-
The signature verification system is still very much work in progress, but the source code is available at https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-signatures.
If anyone would be interested in trying this out on their site, feel free to reach out!
-
@stefan ok so I'm beet red and hiding my face in shame... I was putting on my FULL url instead of just the server name. Thanks for the heads-up, Stefan. I just added my Mastodon signature
-
@_elena Ah, no worries, you're not the only person running into this, so that tells me I needed to do a better job explaining how to use the site. I updated the instructions, hopefully this clarifies things better.
Thank you so much for giving this a try, and your patience!

Somewhat related: This popped up in my stream yesterday.
https://im.allmendenetz.de/item/a8215a4a-6921-46a2-9abd-e4e0cf9101c8
It's a band/artist site with content pages generated from faircamp and displayed using Hubzilla's CMS and permissions system, while providing fediverse discussions (and groups), and the ability to sell digital assets using Hubzilla's ecommerce addon. -
I do want to say that I don't think we necessarily have to make the fediverse "grow bigger", but I do want to see it become more diverse, and welcoming.
-
Happy to trade some of the racists and mansplainers for a few folks who are into pottery and knitting and keep the numbers the same for example.

@stefan I see far more diverse art on here compared to any other social network I have ever used (which tend to use the algorithms to pigeonhole you into what they think your tastes are and how they relate to whatever categories advertisers want)

@vfrmedia That's good! And we have to, collectively, put in the effort to keep it that way!

@stefan your chances of finding them here is still bigger than on X, Bluesky, Threads, IMHO.

There’s a huge popup on this page that says adblock not detected and that I should install one to be safe.
Which is ironic because I’m obviously running Firefox with uBO, and they probably blocked your attempt at detect an adblocker. But if what you want to do is detect that the user is not running an adblocker, you should be testing for the positive, not the negative: your popup should only load if the code was able to do the most obnoxious, advertising-like tasks without obstruction.

@lambalicious Right, yes, that is how, in part, this works. If you look at the source code, the "ad" uses a bunch of classes that a typical ad-blocker would pick up on.
Also, the "popup" shouldn't take up much of the screen, just a bit of the space at the bottom. I will have to look into all this, thank you for reporting the issues!
