Following a social media post in support of LGBTQ+ game developers, Godot is now getting review-bombed on Steam.

@docpop
"Oh no! Anyway..."
In all seriousness boycotts are largely ineffective, as much as people want to make a public display of condemnation far less are principled enough to commit to it. Sucks in the meantime that the mouth-breathers are whinging but they're not the ones who built a functional game engine. -

@robin sadly, the folks being most affected by these review-bombs are indie game developers, who are suddenly getting mobbed by negative reviews because they built their game on Godot. The two games shown below, Dome Keeper and Brotato, can handle these reviews because they already have thousands of positive reviews, but I've seen many smaller game studios losing their great review scores because of these review-bombing assholes.

Everything woke turns to love?

@docpop they do know 'woke' is a good thing, right? Also, that 'diversity' and 'woke' are not the same thing.
At least, a high school kid would know that. Or anyone who looked the words up in the dictionary.

@docpop I agree that this is terrible but it makes me wonder why a game engine is reviewable on Steam in the first place.

@evan most folks download it directly from https://godotengine.org/ but putting it on Steam provides a nice distribution alternative along with some added chat and messageboards that some people might like. The big advantage of using Steam is auto-updating.
I have a few art and non-gaming apps connected through Steam just so I can get those auto-updates.
-
@dogfox that's how I read it too, but then I saw it was a negative review. Confusing that they used hearts there.
-
@docpop This confuses me, the game creating and PC gaming community is pretty substantially left leaning to my mind, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

A game developer shared a new project on X a few weeks ago and said she built it with Unreal Engine, to which some dude replied, "Woke studios always use pre-built engines to make games because they can't build their own engines."
It was an INCREDIBLY stupid reply, which quickly became a meme in the gaming community.
Godot then posted "Apparently game engines are woke now?" (an objectively solid post, TBH) and gamers claimed the post was "too political". That's the post this is all about.
-
@docpop wow, I didn't realize exactly how stupid the origins of this were. It's unfathomable how dumb these trolls are.
-
@someguyjg right?! These dudes are harassing a bunch of indie game developers and threatening Godot's community manager, all because of an incredibly dumb post some dude made about "woke studios" using pre-built game engines. I guess they ran out of things to be mad about and are desperately looking for things to feel victimized about.

@docpop sorry, but I just had to check my watch to see which century we have.
Nowadays people decide not to consume the products of sellers/producers, just because the sellers are the way they are. It's not about anything the sellers are doing (i.e. harming others) or about the quality of the product - but solely about the seller's identity.Roughly 90 years ago, Germans did something related, where people suggested not to buy products produced by people who identify as Jew.

@workingclassgames I don't use it anymore either, but I hate that it still has so much power over the communities and hobbies I'm in. I'm not just talking about games, there are a few more open source projects I follow that keep coming down to "some thing somebody said on X and is now affecting things outside of X". It's weird how much influence X/twitter still has.
