@wdlindsy But we are a nation of men, not laws. Isn't that what they all died for? A country where criminals get away with crimes, because they're just too scary?

@Godfrey642 That's a question I ask over and over about those who are joined at the hip to him. I have a distant cousin who says she is a Democrat and votes Democratic, but is married to a retired military man who meets weekly with other elderly retired military and Sunday School members, and pumps her full of anti-Harris, anti-Walz poison — and she believes much of what he tells her. I truly don't get it.

@SueDiOh I don't see the Army cowering before him — quite the contrary.
-
@wdlindsy I believe the real story is that millions of people are so devoted to this guy that people know they can't be protected for telling the truth.
Trump could go away today and these people would find a new tough guy to toadie for

I’ve watched this story unfold over the past few days from across the Atlantic, and on one hand nothing he does surprises me, and on the other, I’m astonished that so many Americans seem incapable of seeing, or registering what so many other see.
How on earth can the election still be on such a knife-edge?? -

Don Moynihan's optic on the gross stunt pulled at Arlington National Cemetery:
"Arlington is a small moment that offers a big insight into what a second Trump administration might look like."
Moynihan sees five takeaways here:
1. Public service as a koke; public servants as props.
2. Responsiveness to the President = lawbreaking.
3. The Purpose of schedule F is to enable impunity.

4. Media can get past both sides coverage.

Noah Berlatsky thinks that, though there's strong resistance in some quarters to the use of the term "fascism" to describe what Trump and his minions are about, the Arlington drama shows us that "we are actually at the point where fascists are silencing people."
It shows us that fascism is already here in Trump and his thugs.

@wdlindsy Why won't the Army enforce their own rules?

"Is this the worst thing Donald’s ever done? Not by a long-shot. But the combination of selfishness, thuggery, menace, and his willingness to bring the entire weight of his power to bear on a private American citizen is a pretty good encapsulation of everything that is wrong with and disqualifying about him.
It's time for corporate media to catch up and refuse to let this one go."

@SueDiOh I had thought the Army employee who is designated to be a gatekeeper at Arlington and who was shoved aside and threatened was quite specifically enforcing Army rules.

@peteralee I ask that, too, and wish I had a coherent answer. I don't. I see many intersecting factors — deep, never totally quelled streams of racism and xenophobia in some sectors of American culture; a penchant for authoritarianism in those same sectors; the baleful influence of toxic religion; and, perhaps new, the ability of social media to twist and alter reality and spread disinformation at lightning speed. These all seem to be playing a big role here.

@wdlindsy Recall, first damn thing he did was go to the CIA and dishonor the wall of stars.
-
@ATLeagle Oh, yes. Trump alone is far from the problem. Millions of Americans are the problem. Trump is simply their face in the mirror.

@wdlindsy Trump thinks, "They say I don't respect veterans. I'll show them! I'll do a photo op with the family of a veteran killed by Biden's bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan!" Then when it all goes awry because it is really about the photo op and not at all about respect, Trump doesn't understand why. He is trying to perform a simulacrum of an emotion he doesn't have, so of course it rings false. Now he is thinking, "I came all this way to this stupid cemetery, like I didn't do before, and they STILL criticize me." So now he plays the victim. He probably genuinely thinks he is the victim. He doesn't understand how to be a human being.

@wdlindsy She tried, but then she was shoved aside and her instructions were ignored. Doesn't sound like enforcement to me. I don't blame her for not making a scene - that's not her job either. But I thought our armed services were sticklers for rules and such. My mistake.

It looks like the Army brass are either on Trump’s side now or are preparing for a Trump win.
“...why won’t the Army [press charges]? What exactly is gained by allowing this act of desecration to go unpunished? And, by the way, engaging in the kind of behavior Donald and his campaign staff engaged in isn’t simply indecent, it’s illegal. So why is the convicted felon allowed to commit more crimes with impunity?"

@wdlindsy it’s the original meaning of terrorism, where the state uses terror as a means of controlling the people.
