@wdlindsy this subset of fascists and illiberals of other varieties has been inside the Republican Party ever since.
They've never taken over before now, though since Reagan they've gained more and more control of the Party. Gingrich, though not a fascist, helped with this. Bush Jr too. Limbaugh of course, who was as much about the "entertainment" as anything was a big role player. Kochs too. And then came actual corpratists with open fascists sympathies like Leo and Musk.

"Mariel Garza, the Los Angeles Times' editorials editor, resigned yesterday after Patrick Soon-Shiong, the newspaper's billionaire owner, blocked the outlet’s decision to endorse Harris. This has further strained Soon-Shiong's already tense relationship with Times staff during a year marked by newsroom cuts and turmoil."

@wdlindsy You might like the words of English author Michael Rosen, whose family were originally east European Jews.
Fascism: I sometimes fear...
I sometimes fear that people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress worn by grotesques and monsters as played out in endless re-...

@wdlindsy we've been headed towards the GOP openly praising Hitler for a century. The fascists in the party have run the non fascists out at this point.
And, it's very important to note, while the current neo fascism is an evolution of the interwar fascism of 100 years ago, the leaders of this movement are trying to recreate the exact same fascism of 100 years ago, only this time successful.
It's different but it's more the same than normal movement evolutions. Anyway...

@wdlindsy Yes, but remember that Americans who died fighting Nazis were, in Trump's words, losers and suckers. So, emulating Hitler is just fine to Trump and the GOP. So, the GOP is now formally a Nazi party.

And an important piece of information we may need to assess why Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked an editorial endorsing Kamala Harris: as Sewell Chan, previously an editor at Los Angeles Times, reminds us:
"Elon Musk … is friendly with Soon-Shiong — they are both South African-born billionaire entrepreneurs."

Endorsing Kamala Harris, The Guardian states that Harris Harris represents a hopeful future, while Trump will drag Americans back into a reactionary past.
Trump’s authoritarianism may be the end of US democracy, The Guardian concludes.

@wdlindsy It would tell the world that the USA is now officially a fascist nation. No surprise there.

@wdlindsy Trump scares me.
Hitler led people to allow and perform the murder of millions.
Trump in charge with his plans, would leave me to die, homeless and starving to death.

@GreenRoc I think we have every right to be scared.

@mikewaghorne I don't hear anyone who is issuing these warnings expressing surprise that fascist strands are woven into the culture of the US — as they are woven into the culture of many nations around the world, something we're having to face all over again as fascism emerges in one culture after another. People commenting from afar who imagine many Americans are naive about this aspect of our history and culture aren't listening carefully to many of us — who deserve support.

@philip_cardella Yes, that's right. Trump didn't emerge suddenly and out of the blue, like Athena springing from the head of Zeus. A whole lot of Republicans for years now have set the stage for this emergence.
The problem is hardly Trump alone. It's many of us, the shocking percentage of us who now cheer when told he'll round up and deport millons of immigrants.

@philip_cardella Yes, growing up in the US South, I often heard disparaging comments from fellow white Southerners who, unlike my family, were not fiercely devoted to FDR. For many of my compatriots, the story of FDR was like a reverse image of the one I heard in my family circle growing up: he sold us out. He was a traitor to his race. His wife was a lesbian communist. And on and on. The determination to turn back the New Deal has long legs.

@wdlindsy @philip_cardella Yes, they the elite have been chipping away at FDR's New Deal since day one. Ronald Reagan gutted the Fairness Doctrine or it may have become law. Law, which the GOP hates, unless it supports their biases.
