If I were to spend the last two weeks of October slowly sharing my favorite pieces of uh, apple-related (tree not tech) journalism, would anyone…enjoy that?
-
@kissane Yes. I'm part of a community legacy orchard park team. We currently grow 125 heritage apple varieties in a small orchard park.
-
@PhoenixSerenity !!!
Is there any coverage of the orchard park I could include, or is more attention bad?
-
@kissane Absolutely yes! Sounds like a good palate cleanser.

@kissane reminds me of some of @sarahtaber ‘s epic threads.

@petrillic @sarahtaber Oh mine would never be as specialized or ag-informed, I am a mere enjoyer of apple trees.

@kissane We do want more folks to know about it & come visit - if they come to Vancouver Island. They can pick some fruits to eat, while at park. We encourage picking enough for guests to eat while there or to take a few fruits home to eat. We just don't allow heavy harvesting because we want everyone who visits to enjoy some of the free fruits.
We just had our annual community sharing day:

@PhoenixSerenity Thank you!! We haven't been up in years but I'm putting this on my wishes list
-
@kissane You bet I'd enjoy it!

@kissane Only if it’s easily findable later, because I’ll be travelling (near you! ️ ) and probably won’t have time to read then.

I'd love to read about modern apple growing. Here in Ontario over the last 15 years I've seen a huge change in how apples are grown. There used to be individual trees in an orchard; now there are apple "vines", branches grown along wires strung in parallel rows like grape vines. And there is a large mechanical harvester that runs between rows instead of people on ladders in trees. I think apple yield per hectare must be double what it used to be.
