@nanoelquant @xtaldave @academicsunite @academicchatter not particularly accurate in countries where university education is free. Academics are paid by the state to educate students and it doesn’t seem at all unreasonable that their knowledge should be shared since we have all contributed financially.

The point is that Elsevier don't pay for the content that they publish, or the content moderation (peer review) that academics provide.
Elsevier and other publishing houses charge academics thousands of pounds to publish their work, and that money comes from research budgets, which in turn often come from tax-payers or charities.
Then they place that content behind paywalls, so the people who paid for the research can't access it.
But it's a very profitable racket.
