Today Mastodon is taking another step towards its founding ideals: independence and non-profit ownership.

@Mastodon It's important to get as much of it out of the US as possible.

@andypiper @Mastodon Neat - maybe worth explicitly mentioning in the article?

@Mastodon Let's go Mastodon! It was a very interesting blog post, I greatly enjoyed reading it. Especially in light of the new changes in Metas moderation policies and Trumps election, I believe we absolutely need a free alternative based in Europe.

@philbetts @Mastodon so glad it's going the opposite of the WordPress drama

These posts feel important, who exactly is posting them?
They are very corporate sounding, let's be people here.

@CartyBoston @Mastodon sure, happy to tell you that I wrote the content of the posts, and @renchap posted them on our main account!

Honestly, I'd love to see Mastodon as a viable Twitter alternative, but by now I think it never will be. It's a completely different experience. When I open Mastodon, I see a maze of text, 3rd degree replies to I don't know what, and a star button that essentially nobody but me uses, because it does (almost) nothing.
I understand that some people like this type of experience, but me (and a lot of other ex twitter users who went to bluesky instead) would've preferred something else.

@DirkGutlin @Mastodon we use use favorite option all the time and we know others that do as well. it has a function, that function just isn't feeding some opaque algorithm. idk if the stuff you see doesn't interest you that seems like you're not following the right people. the software won't fix that for you. and yeah, no matter what software you use the fediverse is never gonna be Twitter 2 and that's a good thing. we left Twitter for a reason.
-
Thank you for continuing to protect and grow decentralised social media! We're looking forward to seeing what comes next.
-
@Mastodon Thank you to the whole team for all you do. This is a big step - good luck with the changes and with getting more funding.
-
Great to see the continued commitment to open, decentralised technologies in the EU specifically.
We have known for a long time, but it feels more prevalent than ever, that social media can not be controlled by the US. Looking forward to it!

@DirkGutlin @Mastodon I came here to find a Twitter alternative. What I got and the reason I stayed here and on the Fediverse as a whole is that it's much better than what Twitter ever had to offer. And the star button is of the utmost importance. It tells the poster that you liked what they wrote. How is that useless?
-
@Mastodon congratulation to build an ethic alternate to US empire. May the force be with you
-
@Mastodon "We believe social media should help users build bridges, not walls. " yeah right. The rampant fediblocking is nothing but just a wall. Mastodon just ain't go a valid alternative to big tech unless they seriously change their blocking and censorship policies.
