Somebody really needs to figure out a sustainable way to run a Mastodon instance. Because right now it seems like it mostly depends on there being an endless supply of idealists willing to burn themselves out, and while there are always idealists, when the end state is always burnout, even they eventually decide there are better ways to spend their time.

@jalefkowit I mean it’s hard, your either for profit or for idealism. Maybe Mastodon has to go the way of premium subs. Or a few people can donate for the many who won’t ..

@64bithero Revenue is part of the problem (the thing has to be able to pay its own bills, at least), but only part. The linked article talks about another one, which is moderation. Moderation is hard work, and it exposes you to the worst sides of humanity. If you admin a Mastodon instance, you are signing up to do that work, for free, forever.
That's not great!

@jalefkowit @fedward As an instance owner, this. ️
Even for a ruby app, mastodon is a pain in the ass to run. It's comparatively expensive, my tiny <50 person instance costs about $40/mo. It's obnoxious to update. Administration and moderation are painful.
I only keep doing out of love of the community. I'm ready for someone to write a replacement. Better yet, we can all go back to our own personal pages + webmentions and scrap all this push-based nonsense.

@krusynth @fedward One of the things that scared me off from running my own instance is that Mastodon is a big fat Ruby app, and I have already endured considerable career sacrifice to not have to be in the position of being the admin for a big fat Ruby app
I have been watching the development of leaner options like GoToSocial with great interest.
