Nothing like getting up early and going to clear out your storage unit to open it up and hear the distinctive sound of termites chirping and clicking.

Nothing like getting up early and going to clear out your storage unit to open it up and hear the distinctive sound of termites chirping and clicking. They got to four boxes of books.

For those who might find themselves in this unfortunate predicament, here's what I did:
* Sorted out unsalvageable books that had been internally reduced to pulp.
* Laid out the books on the driveway in sunlight for hours
* Went through each book gently using clorox wipes to remove dirt
* Let dry again in the sunPutting them in the sun also recruited help. Termites can't stand sunlight, and jumping spiders and ants were very happy to clean up any of the fleeing survivors.

@vwbusguy I take it that this book is a family heirloom. Is your German good enough to read:
1) the black letter font/fraktur, and
2) the text itself?
Understand if you can't. I have a black letter Dutch bible that I have trouble reading. -

@butterywhiskers It isn't a family heirloom but the German side of my family did keep a Bible with... hair in it. It was apparently a tradition to clip a lock of hair at the time of baptism and put it in the Bible. It is a very large KJV Bible.
This one was given to me in the 1990s when I started learning German from someone at my church at the time. It was sentimental to him but he couldn't read it so he gave it to me.
And yes, I can read it, but don't very often because it's so fragile.

@butterywhiskers If for some reason there's a need for DNA samples for the Rhinehart (aka Reynhardt) family going back to the 1800s, I guess that's a very specific niche data I oddly have direct access to.

@vwbusguy Gosh, that's a lot of samples of individuals' hair!
