This guy’s ridiculous-eating self-challenges are … ridiculous, but kind of endearing too.

@pmcg ugh. And yeah, the amount of points I get is bonkers. I don’t get stuff I don’t normally order but they’re always doing like triple star day, etc. and my go-to item is a tea, so it’s only 100pts… probably the beast bang for the points.

@octothorpe My only regret is I didn’t go on my birthday this year.
My dad has a great trick for a birthday coffee. His birthday is Christmas day, so although some are open, the next day he goes to one he knows was closed on xMas and says heyyyy …
-
@pmcg niiiice. Although doesn’t it appear as ‘taken’ in his account? (I’m assuming this is to double-dip)
-
@pmcg also, fun fact: the starbucks downtown here is Greenwich is where I met my husband. So I have an unusual attachment to the place.
-
@octothorpe Well I don't know where you are, but that's quaint. I bet people are hardly ever meeting future partners in these new online-only teensy stores with no chairs!
-
@pmcg Yeah, back then (25 years ago!) they had comfy chairs and tables. Like an actual coffee shop!
I do think the app kinda destroyed all of that. The physical queue was a natural limiter to the amount of drinks they could sling at once. Now that you can order online, the queue is endless, and stores optimise for throughput (despite saying otherwise).
-
@octothorpe True. There’s a pretty old and big starbucks near me (Durham NC) that has some comfy chairs but they redesigned it a couple years ago to have a lot more tables and benches for laptop users. Hmm.
And it's not like people need a coffee shop for WiFi much anymore. Your cell phone 5G will be faster! Bring back the comfy chairs!
-
@octothorpe I have never watched Friends but I'm familiar with it. Imagine if them, or even the Frasier crew were crowded out and shusshed by a silent crew of noise-cancelling zombies staring into their computers at the favorite cofee shop.
-
@pmcg they remodelled one of the larger nearby locations into ZERO chairs. It’s now just an empty space for people to stand whilst waiting for their coffee to pop out. They totally closed off the back, ao you don’t even see anyone making your stuff. They even removed the toilets (from public access).
-
@pmcg ooof. Of course, we’d still have ‘traditional’ shops if Starbucks hadn’t muscled their way into everywhere.
-
@octothorpe true. For quite a while they proclaimed they were the third space aside from work and home! And now they're kind of a human-powered vending machine.
-
@pmcg on the plus side, they all know me, and give me free stuff. I also make them a big thanksgiving meal, and pie at Christmas. Because who the fuck wants to be working then??
-
@octothorpe I don't think I know you and I don't think you know me but this has been fun. I found you on IG i hope you don't mind.
I assume we were both replying to some interesting thread regarding Macintosh and figured this other guy sounds good enough to follow.
-
@pmcg i’m not actually an IG person. Technically the account is still there, but I haven’t logged in for years.
-
@pmcg and we were mutuals on Twitter back in the day as well, IIRC.
