Even though currently amongst its 27 other representing countries, the United Kingdom is represented by Tim Eicke KC. A man who was nominated to that position by a certain Micheal Gove.
Call this shit out

@Geri
Wasn't the ECHR at least in part the brainchild of St Winnie?
@simon_brooke -
@stuartb @simon_brooke yes, along with Mitterand and Adenaueur, the First German Chancellor.
-
@Geri
Given the way St Winnie is up there with St Maggie in the Tory pantheon, you would expect them to be overwhelmingly in favour of the ECHR - they certainly would be if it was run from London, same as if the Euro was Sterling, or the EU was run from London.
@simon_brooke -
@stuartb @Geri @simon_brooke They’re not actually interested in Churchill’s real politics. Like his role in developing the welfare state as a Liberal, and then preserving Attlee’s reforms when he became Tory prime minister again in 1951. They think he was a Thatcherite.
-
@Nickiquote @stuartb @Geri @simon_brooke A bastard, but yes he was a "wet" One Nation Tory.
-
@FinalOverdrive @Nickiquote @stuartb @simon_brooke vaguely anachronistic but I know what you mean. Xx
-
@Geri @Nickiquote @stuartb @simon_brooke It was the same basic idea: tory welfare statism
-
@FinalOverdrive @Geri @Nickiquote @stuartb the whole British political space has moved far to the right over my lifetime. Starmer is much further to the right on any objective measure than Sir Alec Douglas Hyphen Home, or Ted Heath.
-
@simon_brooke @Geri @Nickiquote @stuartb I still caution against judging Red Toryism as too progressive: it was less about welfare rights than it was about a kind of blackmail: don't rebel, be good, and we'll take care of you.
