I wonder how many fedi servers will remain in existence for any significant period of time.
Micro instances, with tiny bills? Probably.
Mega instances? Some, but probably not all, and probably for financial reasons.
Anything in the middle? I personally wouldn't rely on it.
Perhaps the fedi experience is that of a nomad, wandering from server to server for an unspecified duration.

@neil I'm optimistic that it will be a bit like IRC. The big networks lasted, the tiny private networks lasted as long as the owners needed them for and in the middle was a bit of a swirling maelstrom of networks coming and going, ever swaying in the breeze of burnout, drama and bills.
At least we don't have to maintain eggdrop bots anymore -

@Foritus @neil But IRC isn't federated. In the fediverse, you don't lose access to all your contacts who are on different instances if your instance goes belly up - you can always move to another instance. I'm just hoping fedi doesn't go the way of email with a few big providers gatekeeping access to a large proportion of the users.
