Just had to say a polite no, to a client who doesn't understand where to find the mx record settings for a domain that we don't manage that's with 123 reg.
The client wanted a screenshare to walk them through 123 regs domain panel.
All this while using the "Its for charity angle" for an after school club.
I don't do screenshares I work in a terminal. I'm also not particularly happy being asked to do this out of scope work essentially for free.

If you can't operate a domain providers control panel, perhaps pay someone to manage it for you.
-
@onepict Surely 123-reg have their own support for this kind of thing
-
@onepict Solidarity! There's "trying to be helpful within reasonable bounds" and "free work and risk".
-
@welshpixie You'd think so wouldn't you?
But it's cheap.
-
@neil I remember years ago when we lived near holiday cottages and the manager brought up a clients laptop for me to look at.
At my home. I have a firm line on boundaries.
-
@onepict Wow.
-
@welshpixie and the email service was for fastmail.
You'd think either provider would have documentation for this. 123-reg is one of the largest domain providers in the UK.
Instead people ask for "Free support" from smaller firms.
-
@neil There's a reason I live in the middle of nowhere now.
-
@onepict blergh
-
@welshpixie there's a kinda nasty unsaid truth when it comes to smaller Support firms, especially when it's started by young folks.
You take any and all jobs as you are full of energy. This sets expectations of some small business clients.
Business burns out, but there's always a pipeline of the next small support firm.
Value your time and yourself. Quote accordingly and add a percentage on top, because you will not have quoted enough.

@onepict Agreed. Or pay for the help!

@pch I think clients feel with hosting that it's "free money" somehow where we do nothing.
But the truth is, what happens if every client thinks that?
I think it's the fact that the internet doesn't feel real, so services should be cheap.
