Oh nice, Mastodon is getting an alt text reminder.

There's been a number of times where I've searched for a photo I saw and found it immediately because the poster added very descriptive alt-text
@tom Yes, I've definitely taken advantage of that myself!

If you're using the WebUI, as I am, there's a splendid bot to follow that does essentially the same thing. Details in this post...bytebro (@[email protected])
@[email protected] I've posted this before, but I'm pretty rubbish at remembering alt-txt, but since I followed @[email protected] I have no problems, because if I post an image without, it DMs me with a reminder so I can go back and add it 🙂

@bytebro Yes, I used to follow a similar bot back on Twitter, definitely helped me a lot to get used to always adding alt text. Now it's a second nature!

@chriswood Yeah, I am not too sure how effective it is when people tell each other to add alt text.

Stefan's Personal Mastodon Server (stefanbohacek.online)
I've only done it once or twice in the past, and those conversations were very polite, but ultimately didn't lead anywhere.
And yes, definitely looking forward to writing a follow up to https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/alt-text-health-check-image-accessibility-report-2/ in a few months!
@stefan thank you for helping raise awareness about accessibility! The post in a few months sounds great, looking forward to it.

@chriswood My pleasure, and thank you!

Getting?Yes, your server has this feature already, as it's running a different version of Mastodon.
Now the original Mastodon software is catching up!

@proedie Is it?
I'd imagine this will bring you back to editing your post draft, then you can decide to remove the image and post without it.
@stefan I don’t see a reason why you would want to do that. Besides, you could do the same thing from the ‘Add alt text’ button, IMHO.

@proedie Well you still need to be able to exit this dialog somehow, so I don't see a problem having a third option. Otherwise most people will just hit "post anyway".

@stefan It’s not a problem per se. I just see no reason why Cancel and Return to Editing would be two different things.

@proedie I see what you're saying, basically "Add alt text" might function as "Return to editing"?
I guess I'd have to see how this works, if "Add alt text" opens the popup where you put in the alt text, that would be an extra step to have to close that, and then remove the image.
If you click Cancel, I'd expect to go back to the draft, then remove the image, if I wish, and then click post.
Plus you might not think that Add alt text will let you go back to your draft and remove the image when you first encounter this popup, so it would just be confusing.
I guess we just have to disagree, but to me this does make a lot of sense.
