I'm curious, how much does it cost you, monthly, on average, to participate in the fediverse?

@samsteiner Definitely!
And I'm seeing folks talking about how they'd love to contribute more, but some can't afford to. Both heartbreaking, and very encouraging!
If we could get Universal Basic Income passed, we'd probably get pretty close to 100% people donating.

@stefan in my case, cosocial.ca is cooperatively owned. So, I'm paying for a say in that, as well as receiving the services.
-
@stefan I call it $12/mo because that's what the unlimited VPS that I dedicated to the instance costs, but I'm able to ignore a few costs like DNS, email service, storage, etc. because they're already baked into other things I run and have little or no incremental costs.
-
@stefan My operating costs and donations are public in case you are interested in a deeper look to a niche instance https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Nf3Ko51Qh8s-xqx_K8aiDoK_jyI7zErrpz4ma0HSxT8/edit?usp=sharing

@vees Very insightful, thank you for sharing!
-
@stefan Ran a server once, but not any more.
-
@markdav Too expensive and/or time-consuming?
-
-
@stefan My host doesn't accept donations. I guess I should donate to some fediverse projects directly (e.g., mastodon, although I've heard that project is somewhat hampered by it's leadership?)
-
@SirLich Yes, always a great option!
I run my own server, but have donated to admins of other servers in the past.
And the great thing is that when you donate to developers of non-Mastodon platforms, these folks often share ideas and work together, so you can still affect Mastodon positively!
-
@stefan I can't currently afford to donate to my Fediverse admins, but I start a new job in a couple of weeks with a big pay bump so I plan on at least making some one-time donations once the funds are a little less tight
-
@trainguyrom Nice, very generous of you!
Good luck with your new job, hope you'll enjoy it!
-
I don't have a lot of extra money so I offer time, by doing moderation and such. Not sure how to put a value on that.
-
@EverydayMoggie Yeah, it would've made sense to include an option for that. Sorry!
(And thank you for all your effort!)
-
I wish I had the money to support my instances (both primary and the ones who host my bots)
But Iβm also VERY glad that I donβt HAVE to pay for any of it as that would totally lock me out

@Alien_Sunset I'm really happy that we're able to, as a community, split the costs and share resources to keep the various servers and services running!

This poll about how much the fediverse costs you, in particular, is interesting:

Stefan's Personal Mastodon Server (stefanbohacek.online)
My server costs *me* nothing in dollars but a lot in labour. Other people paid this year's hardware, hosting and power bills, but I provide moderation, debugging and childcare that keeps things moving.
I think a nontrivial amount of unpaid labour goes into a lot of servers. But if I wasn't doing this I'd be supporting my friends on this server in other ways!

@stefan The Well online community offers email, private discussion forums and a mastodon server for $15 a month. We turn 40 next year.

@mazz Huge milestone, congratulations!
