Two years, thirteen million users, still no meaningful self-hosting or autonomy for users, and they're taking VC.

Tell me again how Bluesky isn't just going to be "Twitter 2: DNS Thunderdome"?

For all our many failures, at least ActivityPub land is meaningfully free of venture capital and its attendant horrors
-
@noracodes Yeah exactly!
I like to think of AP kind of like HTTP: it’s not hard to think of things that are wrong with it. But for a large part it’s working as intended and is actually being used!
-
@yosh "actually being used" is really the key, yeah.
-
@noracodes I didn’t dig to deep yet but https://atproto.com/guides/self-hosting shows how to self-host and federate?
-
@noracodes and then this thread https://bsky.app/profile/pfrazee.com/post/3l6xwi52zti2y gives an overview which seems pretty nifty?
-
@stchris Self-hosting a PDS is not like self-hosting a fedi server. Mastodon or Akkoma alone are enough to run a social network; a "self hosted" ATProto user still operates at the whim of Bluesky-the-company. The Website League, for instance, could not be built on existing ATProto software.
-
@noracodes so you’re saying you can self-host but not make it private, right? Because I see no ties to the company, as the protocol is open. https://bsky.app/profile/danabra.mov/post/3l7c3evcp422w seems to say that the website is just a scraper and frontend for the data and there are other frontends popping up just like with the fediverse
What goes beyond what the fediverse can do right now, is that my pleroma and mastodon accounts are different accounts but in AT terminology they are linked to the same identity

@stchris I encourage you to do that deep digging you said you haven't done
