just had a sudden 90’s memory of lists of random anonymous FTP servers at universities that had tons of pirated software hidden in preposterous file paths. like, you’d log in and cd into “. /. /. /…../warez/“ or whatever. they’d work until the sysadmin figured it out.
does anyone else remember this? was it all a dream?

@cabel we had "w4rez” and “m0vies” and others. The little network of pirates on our campus in Northern VT.
fun fact: the sysadmin was the one who ran it.

@cabel I am this toot.
-
@ohthatzack @cabel always was.

@cabel nope I recall that … was a classic directory I recall.
Also used the now forgotten app (and proposed but never official) protocol fsp to get some files from various servers.
(As I recall it did some nice things that ftp at the time couldn’t or didn’t easily)
