Server governance—moderation, server leadership, all that messy political (de)federation stuff—defines a whole lot of each member's experience of the fediverse. But for newcomers and fedi-curious especially, it's so opaque. I want to address that head-on.
revealing the fediverse's gifts
If they’re motivated, tooled up, and plugged into communities of support fediverse server teams can provide context-sensitive, high-touch local moderation for their members—while also connecting to a broad landscape of other well-governed servers. But can new fediverse members find them?

You can also just skip all the fediverse stuff and follow the links to the Aquarius undersea research lab at the bottom. It's incredibly great!

Finally, I failed to put this in the post itself yet bc I'm not used to this but THANK YOU to the people who have signed onto this weird quest I have undertaken!
Your signups and memberships are giving me so much hope for this model, and also so much optimism about how many people care about this network culture work. It's been astonishing to see people throw in and I am so grateful for both the material and spiritual support.
ETA: Sign-ups are here: https://www.wrecka.ge/#/portal

@kissane Good quest, Erin. As you wrote, the sign-up process isn’t difficult. Choosing the instance based on governance and various other criteria a potential new member might have, however, is difficult. Been on the fediverse since 2019 and am on my third instance. Switches were because of instance size, governance (text in “about” and “server rules”), where the server is based, being a part of the Mastodon Covenant, languages allowed. A new user might not think about all those things, and more.

@atomictangerine Thank you! If moving were a one-click process that brought along everything, I don’t think it would matter quite as much, but even then you don’t want new folks falling into potholes

@kissane i mean i would've signed up anyway because i fully respect your work and the ways you think, AND you put "salvage" in the title? which is like. my primary operational value. so. consider it broughten!
