Apparently Republicans are losing their minds today about the fact that women have the right to vote for whomever they choose.

I just hope it doesn't end with husbands "beating the truth out of them."

Probably you are right. Just googled Julia Roberts and top video is a Washington Examiner story about how awful the ad is:
But, as they say, no publicity is bad publicity.
-
well, I think the point of the ad is to assure people that their selection (HOW they voted) is private. "Remember, what happens in the booth, stays in the booth."
One's party registration (if any) and WHETHER one voted or not (yes/no, you voted or not) is indeed public record, easily searchable and accessible publicly.
Maybe the point of this ad is to counter disinfo online, suggesting that HOW one votes is public. It is not!! One's party registration and whether one voted is public, but HOW one votes is private.
I very much agree with you, about the domestic violence component. That's why I found this ad so disturbing. It's as if, the woman could be in danger of emotional or physical violence if her husband knew. I think the ad is saying, your choice is only known to others (including your MAGA husband), only IF you want it to be known and you choose to tell them. or, you can just lie if that's what you want to do. No judgement That's all true, and that's why it's a good ad.
In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is:

So, just watched this and trying to figure out what they are saying. Apparently in backward MAGA land, reminding women that they have agency of their own, and can make their own choices is degrading to women. So, it seems making it clear you expect them to vote how you tell them to is respectful.

I grew up in a Christian household (albeit one of the better ones but still fundamentally flawed). I've been aware of the Biblical justifications for patriarchy and more since I was a child. Why do you suppose that I'm an atheist?

@VulcanTourist @KamalaHarrisWin
This issue is fascinating because it drives right to the heart of core conflict in this election. White men are terrified that their patriarchal privileges are being taken away from them, and they are 100% right, they are, because they are illegitimate and unfair. Women making their own choice of who to vote for precisely targets that angst, and threatens to further hasten the demise of male privilege writ large. It drives them crazy.

Well... now the ranking results have flipped-apparently. So my observation here filtered up to the top and made them change it to avoid criticism, right?

Probably their AI sucked up your comment here on Mastodon and consumed 100,000 gallons of water to make the decision to promote the video.

@mastodonmigration @elduvelle Gotta hard agree here. A proper cup of light roasted Ethiopian coffee is amazing. Espresso beans don't have to be good because the roast is so intense.
And to the actual point, I have to point out that your vote in TX is only partially private. We have those tiny partitions, but then you have to carry your ballot to the ballot box and it's nearly impossible for people to not see who you voted for.
-
@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin According to a voter #turnout study I happened to read today, in 2020 SEVENTY SIX PERCENT of Florida voters thought it was possible for others to determine how they had voted. For this reason alone it is good to inform people their #SecretBallot really is secret.

@VampiresAndRobots what do you mean people can see it? You don't put the ballot in an envelope to transport it to the ballot box? @mastodonmigration
-
@VampiresAndRobots @mastodonmigration and I guess I need to taste this "special coffee" that is neither espresso nor americano, I have no idea what you're all talking about! Does it have a name?
-
Mastodon Migrationreplied to El Duvelle last edited by
Yes, its called 'coffee.' Sometimes 'brewed coffee' or 'fresh brewed coffee.' to distinguish it from espresso drinks.
It is generally made in a 'coffee machine' which is different from an espresso machine, basically just a big filter basket filled with grounds that hot water passes through, but not compressed or packed like an espresso machine (below). Lately all the rage is 'pour over coffee which is produced a cup at a time: https://counterculturecoffee.com/blogs/counter-culture-coffee/guide-to-pour-over-coffee

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin be sure to do the youtube algorithm thing -- view it to the end, click the like button, maybe even subscribe to their channel for the next week. Click like on the first few comments you see that don't suck.

@mastodonmigration @VampiresAndRobots oh yes I see. Yeah I'm not a fan of that type of coffee (it just tastes too mild for me) but maybe I'm just not using the right coffee beans!
At the moment I have the Italian type at home but I don't think it makes great coffee, I'd rather have an espresso machine, but they are too expensive... And also if I had one I'd just be drinking coffee all the time which would be very bad for my sleep.

@mastodonmigration I love how all the comments are, how dare you imply Republicans are like that, while all the notable Republicans speaking out are proving that they are exactly like that.

Right?! They are twisting themselves into pretzels. That's what happens when you basically live a dishonest disingenuous existence. Reality trips you up.

Hmmmm . That is a pretty common reaction from Europeans who have not really experienced good American coffee. Would encourage you to keep an open mind and next time you are over here seek out a good coffee shop, they are everywhere, and order a regular drip black coffee 16oz. It may take a few times to get over your espresso bias, but you will be hooked. Goes great with a chocolate chip cookie.

Indeed. Some men. Far too many.
