And again: I will block everyone who wants to start a discussion on what they think are better solutions. This is not the place and time for that. Start your own thread instead. I try to help people with GoodEnough solutions that I actually use myself.

@jwildeboer how has Nextcloud been working for you? People have told me it's quite heavy and a little sensitive to slowdowns

@jwildeboer With some stories about Hetzner just cancelling your account and deleting your data without warning or apparent reason, I'm glad I have nothing to do with them.
BTW, 1000GB at TransIP is less than 10.- euro.
Also Strato.
And there is Nextcloud. -

wrote last edited by [email protected]@Huubje The StorageShare solution from Hetzner I use means that they run the backend. So far I have not experienced problems. I have a synced folder on my laptop that JustWorks so far.
I also use the web interface to upload files to other folders that don't need to be synced. I don't use features beyond that. It's an easy solution to store files. Good enough.

And there is Nextcloud.@AngelaScholder Oh please do try to confuse my followers and friends with such stories while I try to at least explain possible solutions that actually work for me. So nice and helpful. Not.

@jwildeboer Fair warning: I tried setting up Nextcloud on Hetzner once. They let me sign up, let me choose a server, let me input my credit card, and then demanded I use PayPal (no thanks) or scan my driver's license and send it to them.

@jwildeboer For the record, hetzner does business in the US. I'm not sure how much this might have consequences by legal fallout.
Saying this, I have the backup of my backup stored at their disks.

@heymarkreeves I simply paid the few bucks via PayPal and my StorageShare was available in a few minutes. No drivers license or anything else needed. If you don't like them, please feel free to suggest another provider in the EU that you do use. I try to help here. Comments like yours create confusion and drive inexperienced users away. Thanks for that, I guess?

@holgersson They are still based in the EU and thus fall under EU jurisdiction first. GoodEnough(tm) for me.

@jwildeboer Just to be clear - you're running NextCloud locally at gone but with Hetzner for storage only? What protocol does it use for the transfer there?
I quite like the sound of something like that, especially if it can replicate it locally and to such a serviceFor what it's worth I've been very impressed with Hetzner's hosting which we've use for the Adoptium CI system for wire a few years now.

@jwildeboer I use mega.nz.
@sennoma And I use Colgate toothpaste. So please link directly to their Nextcloud based storage offering to give the readers of my post the information they need.

@sxa No. I only have the nextcloud app installed on my laptop to sync files and folders. I can also upload files via the web UI at Hetzner.

@Huubje @jwildeboer To chime in here with my own experience in case it helps, I can say that with a few users and using a variety of Nextcloud apps (in addition to file sync, heavy use of Talk and News, alongside some lighter apps like Cookbook) I did recently-ish have to upgrade the VM I run my instance on to 2GB of RAM to solve some OOM issues especially when running upgrades but it's been fine since, and only has a single-core 2GHz CPU instance allocated. And I've even been lazy and the database backend runs inside the same VM! So it's not super light but it's also far from heavy, especially by modern standards. -

@Huubje @jwildeboer to add to Jan's experience: I'm hosting it myself, have been for years, and frankly it's fine. Just follow the admin manual, make sure that the various caching bits are set up properly, and you should be golden.

@keithzg @Huubje This thread should have been about an easy way for not too technical people to have storage for files in the EU. And now you are throwing in loads of unrelated tech jargon about your own server which is absolutely not what I try to propose with my thread. Why does this always happen? Even when I very specifically ask to NOT do that? Le sigh

@max But I am not running my own instance. I rent Nextcloud backed storage at Hetzner. And that approach is what I tried to share with people so they can also start using it. Now you (and others) are adding unrelated tech jargon that will confuse people and drive them away from trying. Thanks, I guess?

@jwildeboer @sennoma Dude, no need to be a dick.
