Does anyone know the difference between existing relays and the recent proposal/announcement by @MastodonEngineering about "discovery providers"? On paper they sound like they're the same thing? Are they?
No one seems to have an answer to this in the thread at https://mastodon.social/@MastodonEngineering/113125057908864709 and the website https://www.fediscovery.org doesn't really explain either.

@homegrown @MastodonEngineering I believe it's still pretty early so there's a lot of discussion going on, @andypiper probably knows more
But my understanding is that when you subscribe to relay your server has to ingest every post from the relay, and this setup they're discussing is more of an alternative search provider. So your server doesn't necessarily need to have all the posts in order to search for them (which should hopefully help small instances which can't subscribe to relays because of cost issues of ingesting hundreds of thousands of posts)

@tom @homegrown @MastodonEngineering that’s a pretty good way of describing it. We think there are basically going to be interfaces for an instance to (optionally) submit indexable data to a discovery provider, and for them to search / request data from the provider which would then be locally merged with local search results. TBD in detail - another repo with initial specs will be coming (likely before end of month) with a discussion space there as well.
