I don’t like that in popular post-apocalyptic pop culture, the resistance is always some kind of grizzly man or stern woman.

Also, free hugs.

@skinnylatte
I've always thought of myself as the person who reminds people how to knit and other simple crafts. -
@skinnylatte I *think* this is what the genres of solarpunk or hopepunk are trying to do? (If you want to find works that agree with this position, assuming you don't already know this...)
-
@skinnylatte what about a sarcastic old geezer. Takes all kinds to make a Resistance.
-
@aoanla yeah that’s why I said ‘popular’
I’m aware they exist and would like that to be more mainstream
-
@TriflingTree essential!

@alberto_cottica everyone’s welcome!

I play a lot of the Last of Us and my wife says ‘in the apocalypse are you really going to be the person crawling around reading letters when there’s a zombie next door’ and I say yes probably
Sometimes the letters tell you the secret code to a safe and you can get all the things you need without running through zombies
-
@skinnylatte I need to put some letters around the house, one with a secret code.
-
@skinnylatte thanks for your work in AI in hastening climate change and the apocalypse you speak of
-
@ben ?? I’m trying to work on opposition to AI? My work says ‘don’t use it’
-
@skinnylatte Sorry I thought you worked at this place that has partnered with Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, StabilityAI etc.
You tell them not to use it though?
-
@ben I am on various government advisory boards and I proudly play the role of ‘don’t use it’. That stance is clear and unwavering. My work at the nonprofit is not about working with them. It’s about poking holes in their work. But okay, thanks for all this.

Part of my family comes from poverty and for a while there, they had so few clothes that laundry day meant “stay in bed for a few hours, you got no clothes”.
And yet, the kids had dolls. Not a lot, not the fanciest, but the importance of joy and of kindness was understood. There were birthday parties. There were siblings helping each other with homework in a new language.

@skinnylatte I think they're becoming more mainstream - a lot of people seem to agree with you, if the popularity of the panels on them at this year's World on are a reflection...
-
@skinnylatte Actually the TV show "From" has a pretty diverse cast. Artists, hippies, cops, tech bros, cooks....
Also the best theme song ever. Doris Day is rolling in her grave.
-
@sleepy62 I love From
-
@skinnylatte I really want it to be like this.
Solarpunk optimism with mango trees
