"Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets on Sunday night, chanting, 'Bibi [Netanyahu’s nickname], you’re killing the hostages.' On Monday, the first nationwide general strike in Israel since the 7 October attacks began, bringing large parts o...

"The first thing, which I think should be obvious, is that the responsibility for their deaths lies with Hamas, which should never have abducted them in the first place, and that to do so, to abduct, to kill civilians is a war crime. Period."

"I think the other thing to say about this is that it's much more likely that those six Israelis would still be alive if there had been a ceasefire, and both Hamas and the Israeli Government bear blame for the fact that we have not gotten a ceasefire."

"But it's been really striking and distressing to me that in the United States, in the organized American Jewish community, and indeed among many politicians, that the hostages are invoked again and again and again, by people who want to continue the war, as if supporting the hostages and caring about the hostages is consistent with a pro-war position."

@wdlindsy I could handle so much more of these discussions if they’d start with statements like this one. I.e., I can listen to what this person has to say next.
-
@wdlindsy If Trump really did argue against a cease fire, that's blood on his hands also.

I’m hoping things will change after the election. Biden and Harris would be stupid to take the political risk of changing policy positions before it and Netanyahu knows this. It’s horrible but that’s the reality. That’s my take on it -

@SoGeneris The people whose commentary about these issues I take seriously and follow carefully always repeat, over and over, what Peter Beinart says here.
They also recognize that ending with that statement and refusing to recognize that the Palestinian people are not equivalent to Hamas and the Palestinian people are human and deserve to be treated wtih dignity and given justice is moral nonsense and no one pushing that position can claim to be pushing a really moral position.

@SNerd I think all of this does place Kamala Harris in a very delicate political position, and for her sake and her chances in the election, anything that happens prior to the election — and her response to it — may have strong political consequences for her.

@timo21 Yes, I agree.

And Netanyahu met with Trump. So we have Netanyahu and Putin ready for an October surprise -

@SNerd Yes, I've been waiting for just such a thing to happen.
