Would anyone be interested in participating in a sort of retro gaming "book club" style group?

@Zergy yes, it already exists as the #VideoGameClub by @GaymerGeek, every month or two months we vote for a game (retro or not) and we share our progress, you are welcome to join @killyourfm
GaymerGeek (@[email protected])
Attached: 1 image So the winner for #VideoGameClub for #VGCJan2025 #VGCFeb2025 is Stardew Valley! I am actually looking forward to this as I really want to play the new update and I have heard some really great things about nexus mods for the game as well. If you have any recommendations put them down below for mods. #StardewValley #videogames

@thanius Sounds like a great way to gauge the time investment! How did you and your friends carry out the discussion? Was it in person, a forum, email, video chat?

@ReverseModule YES! Hell, if you're in then we HAVE to do it.
Stay tuned! -
@nausahaver Ok, awesome! We'll keep bashing out some structure and ideas here, and then round everyone up and get organized (somehow, haha).
-
@necrophcodr A very valid consideration. I think we can get by on emulation of games that are no longer for sale by publishers.
-
@lyonsinbeta I hear this, loudly. I *sincerely* miss having fun discussions about games, and I also miss podcasting (especially without the pressures of work or a deadline to stress about).
Admittedly, I don't have many answers yet in terms of groups size or discussion platform. I'd like to decide those with everyone who wants to participate. I do think a lot of it should be async, as that just fits easier into people's schedules. Maybe with a monthly group podcast/check-in chat?
-
@DEDGirl Pong was the first "console" I ever owned! But no, not quite that ancient. I think everything up to the 6th generation of consoles would be fair game (and maybe even some DOS classics?)
-
@mike Maybe it would be cool if you could enjoy it from the sidelines somehow? Like an irregular podcast or after each game is finished or something.
-
@TeamLinux01 HAHA! "Project Backlog" is yet another idea I've wanted to execute for awhile. Too many ideas, not enough clones of myself. Stay tuned, I think this is going to generate a lot of discussion.
-
@killyourfm a podcast would be cool. Or maybe a blog post that summarizes the group discussion?
-
@remidu @Zergy @GaymerGeek Thanks for the feedback, and your game club sounds awesome! I'd like to stay focused on retro though.
How does your group organize, vote, and discuss stuff? Is it all done here on Mastodon?
-
@mike I would sincerely love to do a strictly hobby podcast. No deadlines, no pressures, no extra polish, no marketing, etc.
-
@killyourfm This is a really cool idea.
-
@Radgryd The big hurdle is that organization is not my strength! If done right though, I think this could be an absolute blast. I'm wide open to ideas.
-
@killyourfm Sounds great! I'm trying to complete more games this year and revisit some classics I've missed, and this sounds like an ideal motivation. Please add me to your list
-
@killyourfm @chris retrohandhelds is doing it, but apparetly it is all on discord.
-
-
@killyourfm Sounds like a great and very fun idea! It would be great if people felt like recording their game play and/or thoughts and putting them on peertube. Maybe a playlist could be made.
Also could it be a bit dip in and out depending on availability and genre of game? I can't do first person shooters like Doom, but count me in for things like King's Quest and Space Quest.
Edit: woops, I just saw that you said console. I'm not sure if you're including PC games in that.
-
@jupitersigh Honestly, I'm wide open to PC games too! (Especially DOS, which I mostly skipped when I was a kid/teenager). I'd like to think the group will shape this, and not just me.
As for dropping in whenever you want, absolutely! Stay tuned. I'm keeping track of everyone replying to this thread.

@gsquirrel Done! This little club can probably also double as your "Project Backlog"
