A new instance, nederland.gay, has tech[.]lgbt listed as a “bubble instance”. After inquiring about this, a nederland.gay admin, Alex, sent me an agitated DM informing me that they don’t view tech[.]lgbt as racist, that they don’t agree with everything t.l does, and that they received help from this instance regarding hosting and moderation. They also wrote something nonspecific, but I think aimed at Ro.

@jornane I'm not following. Is this trouble?

@collectifission It’s not looking great. There’s better sources than me for this, but to help you in your search:
tech[.]lgbt has had some moderation slipups they’ve doubled down on, causing them to be defederated from a sizeable amount of instances.
There’s still indication that they don’t take covert racist behaviour from their users serious, and if nederland[.]gay takes moderation advice from them, it would mean that covert racism also is okay there. Their answer to me furthered this fear.

Personally, I don't find it too concerning. While I've disagreed with them in the past, I've never felt like Tech.LGBT was a potential harassment vector. "Covert racist behavior" is a problem, and watching for it is important, but it's also hard to spot and we have to worry about misidentifying appropriate posts for it.Moderating these large instances is a constant struggle of keeping track of potential problem users and either getting them to cross the line or somehow show that they won't.
I would also say that TBS is controversial in general, so I don't know that having a negative opinion of it is a sign of anything: I, personally, would not recommend it as a tool.
I don't know anything about this new instance, or the nature of the help they've received, but help from Tech.LGBT isn't a sign of being the kind of harassment vector that I personally worry about when it comes to blocking other servers.

I should also note that one of the biggest criticisms of TBS is how many Queer-focused instances seem to end up on that list, despite how woefully incomplete it is (it does not include some of the worst actor servers), which also kind of galvanizes these LGBTQ servers to stick together and ignore it.It's not necessarily a good thing that people aren't taking reports of racism as seriously, but we didn't block Tech.LGBT OR DAIR when they were having their recent scuffle over each thinking of the other as racist, and I don't really recommend a block of either: I just don't think they are the kind of high-risk harassment vectors that really concern me. I've seen some truly disturbing stuff on here, and it never comes from either of them.
Obviously y'all can do whatever you want, this is your content feed we're talking about, I'm just putting in my two cents on what we've done here.
