Four months ago, Yaste was seen in a photo firing a rifle with a scope that was mounted backward. The image, posted to social media, brought the Navy plenty of ridicule, including from the Marine Corps. The post was later deleted."

“Dear U.S. Navy. The scope is on backwards,” wrote X user @travisakers. “This is why we have Marines on ships.”

@jalefkowit how do you piss off the chiefs so bad that they let you get photographed looking like that?

@jalefkowit Senior Master Chief: [hand on captain’s ahoulder] That’s right, sir, you just pose right here with the rifle while Hopkins throws some brass in front of the camera [starts to chuckle and covers with cough]

@jalefkowit Totally fair tbh. A person in his position should have been to the rifle range many, many times, and know pretty much everything there is to know about using that weapon. This photograph indicates to me that he was probably pencil-whipping other important trainings as well.

@vadhakara I don't disagree. Even beyond the training/competency issues, there's just the fact that the Navy always has more captain-grade officers than it has ships to give out. So the first rule of the captain's life is don't embarrass the Navy, because if you do it will usually just discard you and give your command to someone else. That's easier for the institution than trying to fix whatever's wrong with you.
