"use github!" they said.
"It'll make collaboration simple and easy with a single place to find everything you need" they said.
-
@munin oh definitely Don't use it for search, worst search i've ever seen (literally worse than grepping for a fixed string)
-
@Gankra @munin the last time I complained about github search being completely bonkers broken, a github employee showed up and told me to opt into beta features so I could get the real search that more or less works, because they already stopped maintaining the shipped one. That was over a year ago but maybe it’s still in beta
-
@0xabad1dea @Gankra @munin That version of search has already hit general availability (https://github.blog/news-insights/product-news/github-code-search-is-generally-available/), it sadly still chokes on large repos but is definitely an upgrade over the version it replaced.
-
@msfjarvis @0xabad1dea @munin ime the new search is Worse because it doesn't actually show you all the results for a search term
so like if you want to find "all instances of xyz in the repo" it fails at that basic task
-
At least some of the time, I just clone the repo locally and do the search there...
-
I know workarounds exist. I want the tool that those fucking assholes coopted out of the public commons to work so I don't have to come up with workarounds.
-
-
@munin Yeah, wasn't saying you should have to. Mostly just exasperate that their tool is so bad that I've had to resort to that sometimes.
-
I'm fucking sick of having to come up with unique one-off fixes to accommodate others' failures and inconsistencies, and I'm completely out of spoons to suppress my bitchiness.
