@foone My first ever PC would not boot from its hard drive, but would boot from a floppy. It was bought at auction, so I had limited recourse.
Dumping the boot sector on the hard drive and comparing it to the floppy's boot sector (this was the time of dinosaurs) showed that two neighbouring bits from the hard drive were always either both high or both low.
Magnifying glass revealed a bit of swarf between two pins of the hard disk's controller chip. Swarf removed, booted perfectly.
