Microsoft: Happy 2025. Here's 161 security updates.
Microsoft today unleashed updates to plug a whopping 161 security vulnerabilities in Windows and related software, including three “zero-day” weaknesses that are already under active attack. Redmond’s inaugural Patch Tuesday of 2025 bundles more fixes than the company has shipped in one go since 2017.

should we start a pool to guess how many subsequent updates it will take to fix all the things they break in this mondo update?

Would you believe I get shit all the time from my journalist colleagues who think it's quaint or cute (or pathetic?) that I still write about Microsoft Patch Tuesday every month? It's really the only column that is regular, and I've been doing it as long as I can remember (all the way back to my early Security Fix days at The Washington Post). I guess that just makes me really old (get off my lawn!)
I still do it I think for the simple fact that this stuff is important, and its easy to not give any fscks about until stuff goes sideways. And let's be honest: People need reminding about it because nobody wants to do it.
Yeah, sure there's probably some nostalgia embedded here somewhere. But if you're a Windoze (ab)user (you know who you are) you kinda need to be paying attention every once in a while.

@briankrebs Thanks for doing it.

The one thing I miss the most about DC214 meetings is that we would review Patch Tuesday and big patches from other companies.
typically people would have details on one or two of them, and we would discuss.
Journalist colleagues are just jelly.

@briankrebs That article was one of your best. I read the update crashed some other software while it was updating.

@briankrebs every once in a while, like every second Tuesday of the month... It's the same when people get caught by 'surprise' that support for some MS operating system ends after ten years. Come on, just put it in your calendar, it's your effin job. They always say patching is hard, and I agree to some extent, but come on... The boring stuff is the important stuff, thank you for keeping at it! And also the non-boring stuff
-
@briankrebs wait... Friends think "security dude writing about security stuff" is... Oddball behavior? 🧐
-
@briankrebs I’m glad you still do these write-ups!

@briankrebs Plenty of people get popped by not patching or by exposing things to the Internet that shouldn't be.
Until those things stop happening, regular reminders are necessary.
It's also nice to have a regular place to see the monthly damage. Patching won't ever go away, so might as well stay aware of what's happening.

@briankrebs
Zowee....that's a bunch -
@briankrebs just going to say at least you are writing facts and not some self serving opinions.

@briankrebs I’m not even a Windows user and I like them. I tell my Windows users about them.
