I wonder if I should try power line ethernet to try and get a bit better throughput on my laptop (while docked) and NAS.

I wonder if I should try power line ethernet to try and get a bit better throughput on my laptop (while docked) and NAS. I guess the main thing I've heard is to make sure it's possible to return them in case it doesn't work well, since it's so variable depending on your particular wiring
-
@nytpu we would recommend MoCA instead of power line ethernet. PLE is simply less robust
-
@atax1a If I could run new cabling why would I run coax instead of cat 5
-
@nytpu oh, we're used to coax being run all over already. if all youve got is power lines then i guess give it a shot, but everything weve heard about powerline devices is not so great
-
@atax1a Yeah, as I mentioned it's supposedly super variable based on your particular wiring (and what you have plugged in since low-quality switching power supplies spew high frequency noise onto the lines). And I guess I could theoretically use MoCA for my NAS because it's right next to the satellite TV box which is the only other coax run in the house other than the one to the cable modem
-
@nytpu we're just thinking about how a bunch of the houses we've been in have had coax run to every single one of the bedrooms for whatever reason. maybe that's a regional thing.
-
@atax1a Yeah, I mean that makes sense if you want to have TVs in the bedroom and route either a roof-mounted OTA antenna or cable to each. I'm guessing the people who lived here just cheaped out on getting cables run (at least they have one that was suitable for the cable modem for internet…)
-
@nytpu cable tv / modem installers love running coax afaik, that looks like how all the runs were done here
-
@atax1a I actually found a coax run curled up in my closet that's been disused since well before I moved in (although hopefully still connected), maybe I can go full MoCA…
-
@nytpu for the record we have heard of and experienced a total of 0 problems with moca devices. i dont think theres another single piece of tech that meets this mark. it actually just fucken works???
-
@atax1a Oh but apparently it doesn't work with satellite TV so once again I can't use it…
-
@nytpu this is a rollercoaster ride
