@wdlindsy when I was a kid mother always referred to the sofa as The Chesterfield, I guess she was a bit pretentious. This left me thinking sofa, couch and Chesterfield were synonymous, which they are but the brand name is a subset of the other two. This was hilarious when I went to the US and called their sofa a Chesterfield.

@Oldfartrant I love the term Chesterfield for what I grew up hearing called a sofa or a couch. I had never encountered the Chesterfield term until I went as a graduate student to Toronto in 1978. At first, I had no idea what people meant when they talked about sitting on the Chesterfield, but then I became enlightened!

@CloudyMrs Yes, it does, and scientific research has been done repeatedly to show that the more homophobic a man is, the greater the possibility that he has hidden same-sex attraction.

#AllMen need to understand that girls and women have dreams and goals for their lives that have nothing to do with reproduction or weddings.
Many of us enjoy doing our hair, makeup, and dressing up when we're girls. It's not to attract boys. It's fun. We don't stop playing because we get older. Some of us are good at math, science, law, and medical professions. We enjoy working. We're #autonomoushumans -

"I am often asked when authoritarians hold appeal for societies. One throughline of this history is the perception of a 'crisis of masculinity' at times when women have made strides in society that are perceived and felt as injuries and threats to male authority. Up comes the 'strongman' to solve the problem by turning the clock back and restricting or eliminating women’s rights."

"The sexism and misogyny of J.D. Vance is a textbook illustration of how women are conceived in a white supremacist patriarchy: as the givers of love, nurture, and, perhaps above all, children. … We are human givers, not human beings, consigned to various forms of material, domestic, emotional, and reproductive labor."

When it comes to misogyny, J.D. Vance isn’t an anomaly or a throwback. He’s a textbook illustration.

"Here are five additional lessons about misogyny, courtesy of the sad, weird, mean men that constitute the face and base of the Republican Party currently."
1. Misogyny loves “good” women.
2. Misogyny and sexism are frequently in lockstep.
3. Misogyny is deeply racist within a white supremacy.
4. Misogyny is a unifying, organizing, animating force in political conservatism today.
5. Misogyny need not be sincere, and it goes far beyond individual men’s attitudes.

Back in college, studied "crisis of masculinity" concept in film, literature, society. It's a big idea, and there are receipts to back up the premise. Also ways to puncture it.
Anyway bottom line, much of humanity is stressed out to the max. And when stressed, we embrace sone crazy shit, like fascism.
Maybe our entite species needs a dose of ketamine to get our heads screwed back on correctly. Clear our vision. We gotta wale up.

@smoot You should present her with a gift copy of Erik Erikson on the theme of generativity and how it's not at all confined to biological generativity.

@KarenStrickholm It's interesting that you studied it back in college. The claim that men or boys are "in crisis" just cycles and recyles every few years, as if it's some totally new concept. It's always been cycling around in my lifetime. It has everything to do with hysteria among many men that women have gained long-denied rights.

I find this interview fascinating because that quote actually comes from the interviewer. JD Vance's description of his own situation, though, doesn't align with what the interviewer is saying.JD says his wife wanted to pursue a legal clerkship when their first baby was 7 weeks old, and so her mom (Biology prof at a university) took a one-year leave of absence from her job to come live with them and provide care for their child. He seems to support all of this.
