There's an entitlement that people have towards the islands and Pacific Islanders.
They think we owe them hospitality, but we really don't. Breaking this stereotype of the "fun, happy islander" really upsets certain people.

I once told an old coworker that taking a vacation to Hawaii during the height of the pandemic was the worst idea possible.
She kept saying "Oh, but we'll be safe! We'll social distance!" but simply NOT going was out of the question.

Of course, I was painted to look like the bad guy because god forbid my Polynesian ass tell a white family not to travel to an island with limited medical resources.
But being in the Bay Area was "depressing" for her. I can't help but roll my eyes.

By the way, none of this is limited to the South Pacific. This issue affects people in various island nations all over the world. (SE Asia, the Caribbean, etc).
I'm a big believer in building international islander solidary.

@sipi_xo hahaha island nations wouldn’t need tourism for hard cash if they were fairly compensated for the last few hundred years of slavery and resource extraction, not to mention the impending doom of ice caps melting due, in part, to tourism
